Uganda UKG Bloom Silverback

from $16.00

NKG Bloom is an initiative sponsored by the large Hamburg, Germany coffee conglomerate Neumann Kaffee Gruppe to provide capital, technology and training to small coffee farmers around the world. Silverback is a homage to Uganda’s iconic mountain gorillas that gained international attention through the primatologist and conservationist Diana Fossey’s experience documented in her 1983 book “Gorillas in the Mist” which spans her 13 years of research among the noble gentle giants. Our coffee is hopefully delicious… ripe, juicy and sweet aroma like a chocolate covered cherry with a flavorful mouthwatering pivot and rustic crescendo. Like the mighty Silverback’s display of strength, this coffee has a fair for the dramatic.

Process: Natural… cherry left intact to ferment before wash.

Elevation: 4920 feet

Aroma: Somewhat of a “cherry bomb”. At the grind… ripe red fruit/cherry prevalent, milk chocolate. At the brew… maintains ripe fruit and sweet chocolate with a more rustic character.

Flavor: A tart pivot from the aroma. Rustic, bittersweet, cherry tart, black tea audacity.

Roast: Medium…  medium syrupy body… moderate but mouthwatering acidity.

Roughly twice the size of Louisiana and ten times the population, Uganda, a landlocked country, is bordered north by South Sudan, west by Democratic Republic of the Congo, south by Rwanda and Tanzania, to include a long coastline on Lake Victoria, and east by Kenya. Our coffee is cultivated at the base of Mount Elgon, an extinct 10,000-foot volcano bordering Kenya, by a hub of smallholder farmers in the eastern Bulambuli district, approximately 170 miles northeast of the Lake Victoria coastal town and capital Kampala.  NKG Bloom is an initiative sponsored by the large Hamburg, Germany coffee conglomerate Neumann Kaffee Gruppe to provide capital, technology and training to small coffee farmers around the world. Fossey became a lightning rod due to her militant advocacy for the gorilla which resulted in her, still unsolved, tragic demise. Her last diary entry read, “When you realize the value of all life, you dwell less on what is past and concentrate more on the preservation of the future.” Unfortunately, many times prophecy begets martyrdom… wisdom is sacrificed on the altar of ignorance and deprivation. And today, to coin the Talking Heads “Once in a Lifetime” … Same as it ever was… Same as it ever was… Same as it ever was… There is just an Orwellian “Newspeak” to soften the blow. Let’s hope for a realized stewardship and that the lamp of wisdom shines a little brighter.
