Guatemala -Candelaria - Single Origin

from $12.00

“Candelaria” is soft illumination, as by candlelight, evoking imagery of warmth, clarity and hope. Philosophically symbolizing knowledge and enlightenment, bringing light to others in the pursuit of truth. Beautiful imagery which expresses the multifaced depth of our Guatemala Huehuetenango Candelaria SHB and helps one reflect on the humanity responsible for such a gem. Our coffee is curated primarily from three Finca’s or Farms. Finca La Maravilla, meaning “Wonder”, is a remote 59-acre plot operated by Mauricio, father, and Luis, son, Rosales.  Finca Vasquez is the remote dream of its owner Itiel Vasquez. Finca Joya Grande, meaning “Large Jewel”, is a 129-acre plot cultivated by Austreberto Morel Hidalgo Argueta and son. The land is rugged and remote with no modern conveniences… one could characterize it is as unforgiving. Yet there are familial ties and passion that drive this connection… an austere beauty that haunts the imagination. Great thanks to these families that “softly illuminate our lives” with such a lovely cup.

Process: Washed, coffee cherry fruit removed, and bean sun dried

Elevation: 4921 – 6562 feet

Aroma: Bright, lights up the senses, with a hint of nuttiness

Flavor: Milk chocolate, brown sugar, almond and light dried fruit sweetness… perhaps apricot

Roast: Medium… Medium light body

Almost exactly the size of Tennessee, with approximately 2 ½ times the population, and 1200 miles from the southernmost Texas border, Guatemala is considered the pinnacle of Central American Coffee. Bordered north and west by Mexico, east by Belize, southeast by Honduras and southwest by El Salvador, while complimented by a long southwestern Pacific coastline and abbreviated northeastern Caribbean coastline located directly between Belize and Honduras, Guatemala can be considered the gateway to Central America.

Approximately 1250 miles south by southeast of Laredo, TX, passing along the Mexican Caribbean coastline, is the high-altitude Huehuetenango coffee growing region in the northwest corner of Guatemala. The dry, hot winds off bordering Mexico’s Tehuantepec plain protects the cherries growing at altitudes around 6000 feet from chilling frost while allowing the deep dense development of our SHB, single hard bean, manifest with deep chocolaty dried fruit sweetness.  “Candelaria” is soft illumination, as by candlelight, evoking imagery of warmth, clarity and hope.
